Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. revealed this Wednesday, November 2, the first application of a vehicle series of a new powertrain titled e-POWER which adds a small gasoline engine to charge, when necessary, the battery, and thus eliminating the need for an external charger.

The system, and-POWER joins the electric motor to a gasoline engine, but the wheels of the vehicle are always and only driven by the electric motor. The power for this motor comes from a battery of high performance, which in turn is charged by a compact powertrain consisting of an electric generator, a drive and a gasoline engine.

In conventional systems hybrid an electric motor of low power is associated with a gasoline engine to drive the wheels when the battery is low (or in the case of travel at high speeds). However, in this system, and-POWER the gasoline engine is not connected to the wheels – it simply charges the battery. And, unlike an all-electric vehicle, the power source has the source engine and not only on external power to charge the battery.

This type of system usually requires a motor and batteries larger, since the direct source to drive the wheels is the only engine that made it difficult until now to the car industry the assembling of this type of system in compact cars.

Nissan has developed a solution to minimize and reduce the weight and designed methods of control of the engine more agile, to optimize the management of energy. The result: a system that uses a battery smaller than the LEAF, but it offers the same experience of an all-electric vehicle.

once you have the system Nissan e-POWER corresponds essentially to an electric vehicle whose motor drives directly the wheel, all the virtues that make electric cars so popular in the market are maintained. The e-POWER provides a binary almost instantly, which improves the response of the transmission and results in a hard acceleration, but smooth. The system also operates in a very silent, like an all-electric vehicle.

since the system Nissan e-POWER depends on the engine combustion with a very low frequency, and this engine doesn’t have to drive the wheels directly, its efficiency in terms of fuel is quite superior to that of the hybrid conventional, especially in the routes suburban and in the city. The system e-POWER allows you to enjoy all the benefits of an electric vehicle without the worry with the battery charging.

Nissan is committed to the development of powertrains electrically powered that use multiple fuels to respond to the different requirements of world markets. The system e-POWER is just one example of this walk, and will strengthen the range of the Nissan with powertrains electrically powered.

Nissan is also conducting research and development of vehicles fuelled with SOFC (Fuel Cell Solid Oxide) and with hydrogen fuel cell and will continue to introduce new innovative products in various areas and to promote the worldwide use of electric vehicles.
