The Design of the Note 7 was responsible for the explosion of mobile, says analysis – UOL

A pressure in the battery of the smartphone Galaxy Note 7, Samsung, may have caused the fires and explosions that ended up terminating the manufacture of the device, according to a report of the american company Instrumental, which specializes in engineering analysis of products.

In an article published on Friday (2), Anna Shedletsky, one of the presidents of the company, concluded that the problem was not in the battery itself, but in the design of the own cell. “What we found was surprising: the design could compress the battery even during its normal operation,” he said.

As the space to fit the battery was too tight, he press too much the polymer shield, which separated the poles positive and negative of the battery. When these poles touch each other due to a technical failure like this, cause the overheating that led to the accident. This possibility had already been raised by some specialists, including two that were interviewed by the UOL.

“The battery of the Note 7 consists of a layer of the positive is made of oxide of lithium-cobalt, a layer of negative is made of graphite and two layers separator soaked in electrolyte made of polymer. These layers allow ions (and energy) flow between the layers of positive and negative, without allowing the layers to touch”, explains the engineer.

“If the layers of positive and negative even touch, the power goes directly to the electrolyte, warming it, which causes it to flow more energy and more heat –which often results in an explosion. Compress the battery puts pressure on the layers the critical separation of polymer that keeps the battery secure.”

“Add a bit of pressure due to the undulation mechanical normal battery or accumulated stress by means of the back cover (for example, sitting down with the phone in the back pocket), and the pressure can be enough to shake the thin polymer separator to a point in that the layers of positive and negative may touch, causing the explosion of the battery,” concluded Shedletsky.

The text says that Samsung “has said that these layers of separator may have been thin due to the factory parameters aggressive”, but not told when, where or what the circumstances of the statement –the report of the UOL did not find this phrase attributed to some official stance or interview of the executive of the company.

Samsung is continuing to investigate the causes of the accident. Its last official press release reported that the company estimated a negative impact of about 3 trillion won south korea (US$ 2,52 billion) in operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2016 and first quarter 2017, due to the problem of the Galaxy Note 7.

Review your case

The Galaxy Note 7 was announced globally on August 2 of this year. Three weeks later, on day 24, appeared in the social network Baidu is the first report of a Note 7 get blown up while carrying. On day 31, a if the same was reported in South Korea. On 2 September, the Samsung has admitted officially the problem with a statement that cited until then, at least 35 cases in the entire world and stops the production temporarily.

On the 1st of October, the company has returned to sell the Galaxy Note 7 stating that the problem had been resolved. But it was short-lived: on 11 October, Samsung Electronics closed the manufacture and sale of mobile Note 7 definitely after new cases of the fire apparatus distributed to replace models that had already suffered the same problem.

The Note 7 was not marketed in Brazil. Only a few devices have been sent to the press –the UOL received and tested one of them before you return it at the request of the Samsung– or purchased overseas or via import.
