IFA 2014: saw closely the curved display the new Galaxy Note Edge – Canaltech

Galaxy Note Edge

From Berlin, Germany

For those who do not remember, the Galaxy Note Edge is not the first device with curved display shown by Samsung . Early last year, during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, South Korea arrived to present a prototype smartphone dubbed Youm, which also brought a slight curve on the right side. The difference is that now the Note Edge is already a complete and ready to be launched in some specific markets until the end of the year product.

The curved screen is a novelty: it is not known what will be the receptivity of the consumer market and developers. But since we could test the function quickly here in Berlin during the IFA 2014 and we had good first impressions.

Essentially, the Galaxy Note Galaxy Note Edge is a 4, but with something more. The smartphone basically brings the same software and hardware that phablet presented by Samsung on Wednesday (3). Same processor, storage, RAM , and camera design with metallic finish. The exceptions are the weakest battery 3000 mAh and the display, which is also slightly lower. So do not spend too much time analyzing his performance – if you want more details, our hands-on Note 4 is already here. Still, just hold the edge in the first hand, the difference is clear.

The curve to the right of the display quad 5.6-inch HD + (the “+” in the display name, alias , refers to the extra pixels used in the Edge Side curved screen) is relatively smooth and does not hurt much to handle. The “tip” that forms at the meeting of the screen with the base, however, can be a little uncomfortable. Not enough to hurt the hand, but is quite different from what we are used to in traditional smartphone design “slab” feeling

Speaking of which, is an observation:. Whether you are left handed, get ready for an experience a bit frustrating with the Galaxy Edge. It is impossible to use it with your left hand, but the device was not really designed for that. . Turn the smartphone upside down is an alternative, but not very practical, admit

The question that remains is: what is the sidebar? Well, the diplay operates independently of the rest of your smartphone screen, and the idea is that it will serve as an assistant for quick access to applications, information or functions within apps. The camera application is one example. To open it, all control options, including virtual button to take the picture, go to the bar on the right, leaving the entire free display

If you is in the “home” Edge of Galaxy Note, the lateral display can function as an information center, connected to sports news, weather, economy and share services, and notifications to applications such as text messaging or the subjects most discussed Twitter. The bar also has some widgets that can be fully rotated it as the recorder or alarm. Also, at the bottom of the bar there is a button for configuration and customization of the windows of information that you want to use.

Samsung also did a good job of removing the bar from the front when she could become an unnecessary distraction. To put a YouTube video in full screen, for example, it is completely black. In the pre-installed games on the device, it integrates well, freeing up more space in the rest of the display.

It is unclear whether consumers say get used to the display side. Not to mention that the usefulness of this mechanism will also depend on the developers themselves, we should integrate new functions to your apps to interact with it. Samsung has already promised he will provide the SDK APIs and technology so that devs start to play with her. But without a critical mass of users, will there be interest?

The Edge Galaxy Note may even be one of dozens of experiments that Samsung presents annually to point the development of the company in new directions. The watchword here is to innovate and test what works or not. But with an annual budget of more than $ 13 billion for research and development, she has plenty of room for innovation.

Still no word on availability or price of the Galaxy Note Edge in Brazil.
