Review: Samsung Galaxy Note Edge – canaltech (Blog)

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE EDGE

The Galaxy S6 Edge surprised many with its curved screen, but he was not the first smartphone from Samsung with this concept. Before we had the Galaxy Note Edge, announced without much fanfare, especially in Brazil, relying on a “footprint” more experimental and targeting the users who want to escape the traditional smartphone. It is roughly the equivalent of the G Flex LG, although it was not designed to endure twists (that is, not in a friendly way). So, time to know it in detail.

Construction

To analyze the characteristics of the Note Edge, it is important to have the Galaxy Note 4 in mind, since he has inspired both in configuration and construction. He is part of one of the last generations of Samsung to bring what we call the old design, with aluminum edges, but back simulating leather and is built in plastic, without abandoning the typical look of a typical high-end of line Note . Also not so much care about size, since it comes with 8.3 mm thick in favor of a larger battery, but being a bit heavy with 174 grams, to be expected for a model of this size.

There is a small device: it comes with a 5.6-inch screen in 16:10 aspect, not 16: 9 as the Note 4, which means he is proportionately wider and that most users will end up using it with both hands. Of course, you can use it with one hand, but he was clearly designed for right-handed, since the curved screen is on the right side, where the thumb is, which is hardly a problem, since Samsung had to choose sides and ended up opting for serving the majority of users.

Display

The Galaxy Note Edge has the highest display resolution available for a smartphone today, which does not mean the highest density of pixels. They are 5.6-inch screen and 2560×1600 where the extra pixels compared to a conventional Quad-HD screen are there to fill the extra width aspect 16:10. And the quality? The best available to date, combining the pixel density up to 500 dots per square inch (524 to be exact) and the latest generation of Super AMOLED of Samsung technology.

As is standard these screens, black levels are absolute and contrast ratios are the best possible, in addition to very high color saturation, with Gorilla Glass protection 3 to close the set. The curve area on the right side basically has the same functions as S6 Edge – after all, the Note Edge was announced before it. The detail is that the curvature is considerably higher, which means more accidental screen taps. Sometimes it even harmful, since the camera controls are in this region, and sometimes we had to click several times to take a picture.

The same goes for apps optimized for the S-Pen, as S-Note, since the controls are in this region, but it’s a matter of getting used to this concept and let it in portrait mode in just one position. It is worth mentioning that in spite of weird at first, it is commendable that Samsung try new ways to interact with the smartphone, running out of rice with bean that many manufacturers settled using.

Settings

When we said that the Note Edge used the Galaxy Note 4 as base, we have also included in the package configuration. The Galaxy Note 4 was announced internationally in two versions: one with the Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm 805 (present in Motorola Moto Maxx) and one with the Exynos 5433, Samsung’s own, in which only the second arrived in Brazil. Essentially, both have basically the same performance.

The processor has four cores running at 2.7 GHz, 3GB of RAM and Adreno 420 GPU, plenty of specifications to run any program or game Play Store. GT Racing 2, Dead Trigger 2 and Real Racing 3 are no match for this chip, with enough RAM to switch between them without major lags even considering the high-resolution screen, at which point a Note line always stood out.

The standard internal storage is 32 GB with support for micro SD cards up to 128 GB, even set up the Galaxy Note 4 and sufficient for most advanced users. In fact, he is one of the latest advanced handsets from Samsung that comes with support for micro SD cards, which unfortunately was abandoned in the Galaxy line S6 in favor of a slimmer design, and ended up sacrificing important points and displeasing much of the public.

Already criticized several times the use of outdated versions of Android here in Canaltech, which is an even bigger problem in line tops. In this case, it is the Kit Kat 4.4.2 with TouchWiz on top with upgrade planned for version 5.0 Lollipop. Still, it will be behind the version 5.1 and, if updated to this version, comes after the release of Android M. In other words, even costing expensive and being a top of the line, always have the outdated version of Android, making it less competitive in this regard.

Camera

Both the Galaxy S6 S6 and the Edge have one of the best camera sensors available for a smartphone today. For some reason, the Galaxy Note 4 can beat the two devices in some situations, even having been released before, and it uses the same sensors Galaxy Note Edge. The rear camera has 16 megapixels, comes with flash and has an automatic mode able to take pictures of excellent quality in virtually all lighting conditions, in addition to providing a fast and efficient image post-processing software.

Pictures and videos have optical image stabilization and HDR, and recordings support the common formats of video between current line of tops: 4K (2160p @ 30fps), Full HD ( 1080p @ 60fps and 1080p @ 30fps) and Slow Motion (720p @ 120fps). The front camera is not far behind, recording videos with maximum resolution of Quad HD (1440 @ 30fps), native screen resolution, more than enough for conversations via Skype.

The Galaxy Note Edge seems an older design of Samsung, as it does not come with a focus on selfies present in the latest handsets of the company. Still, the self-portraits are excellent in most situations, with a 3.7 megapixel sensor and does not require filters or effects to post them on social networks. The only thing we miss is the gift camera software in the S6 and S6 Edge, most complete and intuitive than the Edge Note.

Extras and battery

Being a Note, one of the greatest strengths of the Galaxy Note Edge is the stylus, its biggest differential and one of the key features that you search in that category that is not present on the line Galaxy S. Another point that has become standard in Samsung’s tops heartbeat sensor next to the camera flash, and has an excellent precision and perfectly integrated with S Health.

The extra list is huge, common line of tops, starting with 4G LTE and going to the NFC and Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP LE and LE. Wifi dual-band patterns in A, B, G, N and AC, GPS with A-GPS, Beidou and GLONASS, 3 MHL, USB Host, infrared port, microphone noise cancellation – everything is present here, which is expected considering that we are talking about a top of the line, in addition to exclusive Samsung, as the Air Gestures and the S-Voice.

With 3000 mAh, the battery life is even very good, surviving a day of use with some confidence and being removable. Just consider the high power consumption of the Snapdragon 805, which has 28 nanometer lithography, and high-resolution screen, which keeps the processor in high-power mode to screen transitions. With heavy use, we need to use the mode ultra economy, which makes the screen goes black and white and provides a few extra hours of use, which limit rather functions Note Edge.

Finally we have the sound system. The rear speaker, mono, can come in quite reach high volumes and offers a surprisingly good quality for a smartphone. The quality of the included in the package headphones are excellent, enough so that the user does not run after a better model to enjoy a good quality of sound, as with most smartphones.

Conclusion

The Edge of Samsung Galaxy Note arrived for a price beyond salty: R $ 3,599, a figure that is likely to fall slightly over time. The reason? We arrived in a few units, not only here but also worldwide, and the experimental footprint makes the price remains high. Of course, we have the high profit margin from Samsung, cost Brazil, Brazil profit, taxes and unfavorable exchange rate, issues that every Brazilian has unfortunately become accustomed and goes for any product category.

Worth the price? Well, the cost-effectiveness is low, as any top of the line, but it is an excellent device in virtually every respect. The only serious flaw that we saw, and that really bothers us is that Android is well out of date, something unforgivable in a device in this price range, which incidentally was the same failure of the original G Flex announced by LG, who was born with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

We greatly appreciate the Cissa Magazine for lending us a unit for testing.
